Why is Brett Favre's name pronounced FAHRV when the V is before the R?

Shouldn't it sound more like FAV-ray or fav with the re silent or sort of "swallowed?" That's what they taught us in French cl, and Favre is clearly a French name. Any ideas? Every time I hear "FARV" it makes me wonder.
