Why do Americans name their kids such weird names?

Think of a boy named Shannon, I have a girlfriend who I went to school with named Michael. This is a different generation and the young girls want to name their kids awkward names because the popular names when I was in school (which was soo long ago)like Stefanie, Catherine, Nathan, RobertChristine was popular. You never hear kids named George, Paul, Debbie, Harriet, or Paulette, Sylvia, etc. It's the sign of the times. I like the traditional names personally
